October 3, 2014Appeal for Cat Family Saved from Train Tracks
October 18, 2014Nine Lives volunteer Rosie Platts is lacing up her running shoes and setting off to tackle the original Athens Marathon course, all 26.2 miles (42.194988 kilometres) of it, in aid of stray cats in Athens.
Rosie Platts, a self confessed ‘Crazy Cat Lady’ living in Athens, is running the full Athens Classic Marathon this year. Having run the London Marathon 4 years ago, she has always wanted to run THE Marathon, the original and most exacting race. She is well into the training now, which is quite difficult because of the heat – and the exact opposite of the training for the London, which she had to do in sleet and the rain!
The Athens Marathon takes place on November 9th, 2014, and Rosie is running for her favourite charity, Nine Lives, Greece. As a volunteer and foster mum for Nine Lives, she sees at first-hand the hard work and love that’s put in, and the difference that is being made every day to stray/abandoned cats.
Neutering programmes are making a huge difference, but they cost, as does helping the poor little souls who need urgent veterinary care due to the many hazards of living in a modern city. The vets we work with are wonderful but they have to make a living.
The money that Rosie will be raising through her gruelling run from Marathon to Athens will be spent on:
- Trap-neuter-return of stray cats in colonies around Athens
- Vet treatment for cats that have been injured in car accidents, attacked by dogs, or suffering in other ways.
- Medical treatment for cats and kittens that are ill (particularly prevalent are upper respiratory tract infections, which account for most of the weeping eyes and runny noses that you see on many street kittens and, if untreated, can result in loss of vision in one or both eyes)
- Cat-food for some of the 400 neutered cats in central Athens colonies that are fed and cared for on a daily basis by Nine Lives volunteers.
Rosie says that running for Nine Lives gives her incredible motivation and determination to run this arduous race, and the smile on her face as she crosses the finish line at Athens’ Kallimarmaro Stadium will be even wider knowing how many needy four-pawed residents of this city she will be helping.
